Wieder ein sehr gutes Portweinjahr. Und Quinta do Portal hat einen der besten Vintage Ports des Jahrgangs gemacht. Tiefes Purpur. In der Nase ausufernde Frucht. Am Gaumen geschmeidig und unendlich lang mit Finesse, Charakter und Größe.
Vintage Port: Der so genannte „Jahrgangs-Portwein“ ist der beste Port aus einem besonders guten und großen Jahrgang. Das kommt bestenfalls dreimal in zehn Jahren vor, der Produktions-Anteil beträgt nur ein Prozent. Die Entscheidung darüber fällt jeder einzelne Produzent individuell, nicht alle erzeugen im selben Jahr einen Vintage. Er reift normalerweise zwei bis maximal drei Jahre im Fass und wird danach in Flaschen abgefüllt. Aber erst nach zumindest 20, 30 und auch mehr Jahren Flaschen-Reifung gelangt dieser zu höchster Vollendung mit unvergleichlicher Öligkeit, Duftigkeit, Fülle und Delikatesse. Da aber der Wein sofort nach der Abfüllung in den Handel kommt, liegt die Verantwortung über die Genussreife beim Konsumenten. Bei der Flaschen-Reifung bildet sich ein starkes Depot aus Tanninen und Pigmenten in Form einer Kruste an der Flaschenwand. Deshalb muss vor dem Genuss eines alten Vintage Ports dekantiert werden. Single Quinta Vintage Port: Der Begriff „Single Quinta“ verweist darauf, dass dieser Portwein aus einem einzigen Weingut stammt. Das sind Weine aus zwar guten, aber nicht herausragenden Jahren (so genannten Off-Jahren), die aber von einzelnen Quintas nach Vintage-Manier produziert werden. Der Wein reift zwei bis drei Jahre im Fass und wird ohne Filtration abgefüllt. Deshalb bildet sich so wie beim Vintage Port ein Depot.

Very dark purplish crimson. Low key, quite savoury nose. Rather sophisticated and mellow on the nose – surprisingly so for a vintage port at this stage of its life. Not the sweetest or most intense. Inky black color with strawberry, spice, red licorice and a touch of cedar. This is a somewhat softer, more fruit forward and approachable style than the classic Portal VP. I am still not sure what the name will wind up being, but I doubt it will be “Portal II.” There is a grapy element to the juice although sweet flavors of plum and blueberry are also present. This is a seriously dense, age worthy wine, powerful, rich and viscous. Again, big ripe tannins dominate the drier finish of this Portal whose grapes come from Quinta dos Muros and are only 8 years old. The vinification took place in 1,000 litre stainless steel “lagares” and was later blended with wine vinified in stone lagares. 1,318 six packs and 60 magnums produced. 92 points – Roy Hersh – www.fortheloveofport.com – August 2005
